I saw her coming in my mind’s eye even before I answered the knock at the door. I opened it slowly and there she was...My curse, my temptation, the woman I could never forget. Ruby stood in the yellow glow of the porch light holding a large cardboard box.

“Dad noticed last night that some of your window panes were broken,” she said as she hoisted the box a little higher. “I thought I’d bring you some magazines and newspapers to fix them.”

I stared at her, drinking in the way the light caught in her eyes and how I could see the peaks of her  nipples through her worn t-shirt. She shifted the box again before I snapped out of my fantasy and took the box from her.

“Sorry,” I mumbled as I took the box and stepped aside. “Come on in. I’m sorry, but Melina wasn’t feeling well. She went on up to bed. I know she’d love to see you, she always looks forward to your visits.”

I was rambling and I knew it. Why was this so hard? It was just Ruby. It shouldn’t be this hard.

I watched as she walked around the near empty living room. I saw her looking around, but I was too distracted by the sway of her hips to care about my blatant poverty. She was beautiful in a strong, earthy way that made me forget everything else.

“Everything looks so different,” she said as she looked back at me with those green eyes that pierced me right in the gut. I had a sudden vision of her naked body under mine, our limbs entwined.

I immediately blushed and looked away, clearing my throat before I could answer her. “Yeah, there wasn’t much left after the war. The whole place was pretty much trashed.”

She stepped closer, trailing her fingers across the scuffed wainscoting, “It still feels the same though.”

“Not to me.” I dared to meet her eyes, but there came another flash of our naked bodies on the floor.

“It doesn’t really feel the same to me either,” she said with a teasing smile. “I was just being nice.”

I nodded. “Yeah, everyone is always trying to be nice. I’m sick of it actually. Doesn’t it make you mad...The way everything has changed?”

Ruby shrugged, “It doesn’t do any good to be angry. I just try not to think about it.”

“I don’t see how you can do it. All I can do is think about it.”

Ruby crossed her arms under her breasts and shrugged, “If you think about it too much it will drive you crazy.”

I looked up at the ceiling to keep from staring at her delicious cleavage, “I feel like I’m already there.”

“Poor, Archer.” Ruby said teasingly as she reached out and stroked my hair.

I looked back down at her and my breath caught. I loved the way she looked at me, the way her green eyes tilted up. I looked from those feline eyes to those soft full lips that were always mine for the taking.

Suddenly, I had her in my arms. I couldn’t stop myself. I was kissing her and pulling her closer, crushing her against the hardness in my jeans.

Her skin was sweet as I licked at her neck. Her moans vibrated against my lips. She clung to me, pushing her full breasts against my chest.

“I’ve waited for this,” Ruby muttered between kisses. “I’ve dreamed about it every night.”

I covered her lips with mine, tasting her tongue as my hand slid up her side until I cupped the weight of her breast, my thumb stroking her erect nipple through her shirt. I could feel her shudder under my touch.

No bra...She knows how to drive me wild...

She was pulling me to the couch, pushing me down so that I was sitting there as she peeled off her shirt and slid out of her own jeans. Naked she straddled me.

There it was, another vision of us, her crying out as I thrust into her and me kissing her bouncing breasts. Her lips against my ear brought me back to the present.

“Do you want me Archer?” She whispered, “Do you want to touch me?”

Ruby reached out and took my hand. She held it up to her lips, her delicious pink tongue darting out to lick each individual digit. I held my breath as she then guided my hand between her legs and slid two of my fingers up inside of her.

You drive me crazy...

She rocked against my hand, arching her back and moaning. I suckled at her pink nipples as she burst apart again and again.

“You’re mine Archer.” She gasped between spasms, “You’ll always be mine.”

I didn’t argue. I kissed her again and then watched as she surrendered to me again. All I could think of was impaling her wetness.

Oh God...Oh God...

Ruby pulled at my shirt, pulling it over my head and then kissing me long and hard, her tongue darting about in my mouth. She knew how to drive a man to the edge, to take me right to the brink and then pull back.

She was so beautiful, so willing... And so naked. She rubbed her steamy mound against me. I ached with longing, actual physical pain, with wanting her. She pulled me down into the floor, forcing me on top of her.

“Tell me you love me,” she said as she pulled at my pants. “Tell me you love me and I’ll make every fantasy you ever had come true.”

Another vision assaulted me. I could see us making love, I could feel our bodies touching, and then I saw the pale figure appear in the doorway.

Prophecy, and elves, and a great battle, and budding romance, and magic, and supernatural creatures, and ...

Author Julia Crane weaves a mix of many elements in her book Coexist. That mix creates a story that draws readers into her world, especially lovers of paranormal books.

What makes Crane's elfin society different from other mythical/paranormal societies such as werewolves, fae, etc? I was surprised to realize that the main difference was the life mate situation. There isn't such things as divorce in the elfin society. Your life mate is your perfect match, and you don't get to meet him/her until your 18th birthday. Other than that, Keegan could have been any other mythical creature. She could have been a witch or fae. Members of their society have various powers, but that isn't only contained to that species.

The story uses multiple points of view to move the plotline forward. Readers get a peak inside the head of Keegan, Rourk and Thaddeus (Keegan's brother). I enjoyed seeing how Keegan and Rourk connected when they had never met each other. If I were Rourk and knew every time my chosen life mate thought about me, I'd be tempted too to go spy on her!

This is Keegan's story, but half of the prophecy (and in my opinion, the more important part) is about her brother, Thaddeus. I wish that we could have seen more about what was going on inside of his head during this stressful time. The prophecy states:
 An elfin child on the side of light,
born with the gift of sight,
tells when light and dark shall meet,
but not who will face defeat.
Eldest son of warrior great,
the child will determine elfin fate.
Keegan is able to describe when the war will happen, but it is her brother that "determines elfin fate." The way he does this is by using his brain and wits. It was a fairly simple idea that took some guts to pull off. Crane's solution of ending the battle is very young adult friendly.

It seemed that for a great battle--the battle that was foretold long ago--to put it all in one book, kind dumbed down the importance of it. If the battle itself was spread out over several books, then it would have seemed more epic. My guess is that Crane did this because the story is more about Keegan's relationship(s), than about a battle. The author did a good job of describing the battle and keeping it geared to the young adult audience. It wasn't too graphic or gory.

I was confused about the importance of Keegan's and Rourk's connection. Keegan's brother saw that she would die and that she should call out for Rourk. The story focuses on keeping Keegan safe, and then when the time comes, she spontaneously runs into the battle and gets injured. Rourk actually had to be told about what happened.  If she were so important, you would think better safeguards would be in place, and that Rourk would stay by her side.

I enjoyed how Crane solved Keegan's "situation" after the battle. It was a nice surprise in the plotline. It also sets up the tension/drama for the second book in the series, Conflicted. Ha, yes, I definitely believe Keegan will be a bit "conflicted" in that book!

Readers who enjoy a good paranormal book should pick up Coexist. It is geared to teens, but older readers can enjoy it too.

I grew up in a village called Swilland, in the countryside of Suffolk, England. There wasn't much around, other than farms and fields, but for the most part I loved it, and I still do. I’m a passionate person by nature. I don’t just LIKE things, I LOVE things. Whether it’s a book, a film, or a sports team. Once I decide to enjoy something, I enjoy it to the MAX.

I’m a terrible cook. I prioritise essential social media work over keeping my flat tidy, because I know best.

Onto my love of reading and, consequently, writing - it was my dad that played a big role in encouraging me to read. He didn't push me towards books necessarily; he simply read a lot himself. Then I would pick up his books and read them after him. I was reading high and epic fantasy from a very young age. I guess that might explain why I have always loved adventure stories with magic and intrigue and princes and princesses in.

I was aware that I wanted to ‘be a writer’ from a very young age. I was convinced I would be the first best seller that hadn't reached double figures in age yet! I wrote about the Danshees, furry creatures that lived through a mirror. I wrote about a Sand Bottle that transported a boy into a world of magic. I wrote about a sick girl finding a music boy that healed her, but transported her back in time. (Wow, I always have loved alternate universes…)

When I was eight I wrote my first novel called The Land of No Return. Despite the title, I am determined to return to it one day. I feel like I owe it to my past self. So, as you can see, I have always been writing. There have been times when I have gone weeks without scratching down a word. Then there are days where I churn out multiple chapters and only my body’s silly desire for sleep and/or food can stop me.

I write because I enjoy it. I write fantasy because I enjoy it. I try my hardest to put something of myself into my writing. I like to think my characters have depth, I like to think that my fantasy worlds reflect upon the real world in some way. You guys will be the judge of that but even if you don't agree I know that I at least try and I can do no more than that.

These days I live in North London and I love it. I work full time and London is a hectic city. Juggling work, writing and a social life is tough but nobody is forcing me to do it so I can't complain. The dream is that writing will be my career one day but it doesn't matter if I never quite make it. I love writing too much to ever pack it in.

I am desperate to get a dog. My mum suspects I miss my cats at home more than I miss her. I am a devout Arsenal/Ferrari/Rafael Nadal fan. I get all mad when confronted with a case of social injustice and then I get all mad when people take the fight for social justice too far. I mostly keep those thoughts to myself and simmer with rage. I watch good TV and bad TV, because I can. What I can’t do is enjoy bad books (subjective opinion of course). I just can’t.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

After enjoying Witchling (you can find the review here), I was looking forward to reading the sequel. I knew it would be about Sully, and I assumed it would be from his point of view. I was surprised to see it was Sully's story from Nera's point of view. Harper was smart to do it that way because Nera knew the danger that Sully would be facing. She, Jasper, and Bones decided to keep the secret from Sully. Had the story been told from Sully's point of view, then Nera's actions and words would have seemed a little extreme.

This book keeps up many of the elements from the first book. There teens still enjoy swordplay. Nera works with her powers to control the elements, and also uses her telepathic powers. Also, Nera's relationship with Bones doesn't progress much. They are still at each other's throats most of the time. However, we see Sully's personal emotions evolve to wanting something more with Nera, and Brie's crush on Bones grows. This creates a bit of tension between all the characters in the book.

Harper adds new characters to this story in the form of a new family moving to town. It seems that at least one of them might have some powers that they might not be aware of yet. It will be interesting to see what Harper decides to do with Peter, Gemma, and Nat in the next book(s). I really liked that Nat is around Rowan's age. Now he can have someone to relate to in Harper's world.

One thing that really bothered me in this book was Nera and her attitude. I just want to shout at her "Stop being such a baby!" In the first book she was moody, but I would be too if I found out that I was a witch, was part of a prophecy, and that supernatural beings were out to get me and my friends. In the second book, she flies off the handle if anyone gives her ANY criticism. It's funny because she basically yells at Gemma to deal with her situation and accept where she is now, but Nera doesn't do the same in her own situation. Every day she storms off from her parents, friends, and Bones. Bones gives her praise sometimes, but Nera doesn't acknowledge that. She assumes he has ulterior motives for it. Then when she is given constructive criticism, she has a snappy or rude remark and storms off. Deal with it Nera! One character summed it up by saying that she's overwhelmed and cranky. I agree.

Readers who enjoy a good paranormal story with shifters and swordplay should check out this series!

Darkness Unbound

Darkness Unbound is the first book in a spinoff series by Keri Arthur. This book takes place about 28 years after the Arthur’s Riley Jenson Guardian series left off. Same world, some of the same characters, only set in the future. I picked this book up mainly to find out what happened to Riley and her family. Thankfully Arthur gives up this information, but mentions everything in a passing way—after all, they are the background characters. And for those of you wondering, no, you don’t have to read that series first in order to jump into this one, but it doesn’t hurt if you have to time to check it out.

After getting a call from her mom to help determine if a soul is still in a young girl or if she has passed, Risa discovers that the girl’s soul was stolen. This sets the story up for Risa to try and figure out whom or what stole the girl’s soul. She has help from a sexy reaper that has been ordered to follow her in order to find her father who hasn’t contacted her since she was born. Apparently her father is trying to tamper with and control the gates of hell. Plus she has the help of her roommates—a half witch /half mare shifter, Iliana, and a werewolf with an affinity for fire, Tao. Oh, and have I mentioned that Risa is half werewolf and half Adeh? Yeah, three very distinct characters with unusual abilities add up to what should be a very interesting series.

What readers will notice is that this book isn’t as dark as Riley’s series. Yes, Risa and her friends deal with evil bad guys, but it isn’t as bad as what Riley had to deal with—probably because she doesn’t work for the Directorate, yet…

Arthur’s writing style is fairly fast paced with characters taking beating after beating and then walking away with only some caffeine to help them get through. It made me tired to think of all of the action Risa went through before she was allowed sleep. There’s a ton of action, a little romance and of course a lot of mystery. Arthur sets this series up well by having the book end with one storyline complete, another storyline still open, and a third one just starting. So far there are five books in the series, with the fifth one due out in 2013, and I can see how it will take several to tie up all of these loose ends.

London Undead series

Werewolves, shifters, and the zombie apocolypse.  Sounds like awesome ingredients for one kick butt story or series.  PJ Schnyder thought so too and created a new series with all of these elements.  The first book in the series, Bite Me, releases this month and I am so excited!!
